JAC VAN STEEN CONDUCTOR
BELFAST PHILHARMONIC CHOIR
ULSTER ORCHESTRA

A work that is born out of enormous personal loss, Dvořák’s setting of theStabat mater, the poem that meditates on Mary’s grief at the death of Jesus, was written following the tragic deaths of three of his young children. This deeply profound journey from grief and loss, through spiritual healing, to radiant hope offers space for personal reflection. Join Ulster Orchestra Honorary Principal Guest Conductor Jac van Steen, a stellar group of soloists including Northern Irish soprano Giselle Allen, and the Ulster Orchestra and Belfast Philharmonic Choir for a beautiful concert that reflects the mood of Good Friday.

An evening at BOZAR as part of Belgian Music Days

The Belgian Music Days concert at BOZAR takes place on February 15, 2024, at 8pm.

Musiq3 and the Forum de la Création Musicale invite you to discover 3 Belgian composers: Apolline Jesupret, Wim Henderickx and Eugène Ysaÿe. This concert is a dialogue between the 3 composers, who represent a major musical heritage for our country. Ysaÿe's score is of particular interest, having been found in the archives of the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR), although it was only performed once, in 1920 in Cincinnati (USA).

Under the direction of Jac Van Steen, these works will come to life in the following order:

Wim Henderickx - La Visioni di Paura

Apolline Jesupret - Bleue, for orchestra (World premiere, Ars Musica commission)

Eugène Ysaÿe - Ouverture sur des thèmes d'Atala for orchestra and choir (European premiere)

Kris Defoort - Human Voices Only for orchestra

Jacqueline Fontyn - Rivages Solitaires - concerto for piano and orchestra

The concert opens with Le visioni di paura (Visions of Fear) by Wim Henderickx, this season's BNO composer. For this composition, he drew inspiration from a painting by Jérôme Bosch and was influenced by the outbreak of the Gulf War in the summer of 1990. The new work, which will receive its world premiere, is being written by the promising young pianist and composer Apolline Jesupret. She studied at the Conservatoire Royal de Mons.   In early 2023, as part of a collaboration with the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR), a manuscript by the famous Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe containing the Overture on themes from Atala was discovered in the Bozar archives. Eugène Ysaÿe composed this work in 1919 as a tribute to his late brother Théo, a pianist and composer, inspired by a cantata the latter had dedicated to him in 1892. The work has only been performed once - in Cincinnati in 1920 under the composer's direction - and will receive its European premiere at this concert.  Human Voices Only, written in 2014, is the first orchestral work by Belgian composer and avant-garde jazz pianist Kris Defoort. He found the inspiration for this work in Morocco. With numerous references to early twentieth-century composers such as Debussy, Ravel, Satie and Stravinsky, Kris Defoort allows the orchestral instruments to play through the different facets of the human voice, evoking an unbroken Arabic melody. The concert will conclude with pianist Jan Michiels performing a short piano concerto by one of Belgium's greatest composers, Jacqueline Fontyn. She wrote Rivages Solitaires in 1989
