Conductor Jac van Steen in São Paulo, Brazil – May 2025:

In Andrew Norman's Switch, the orchestra functions like a video game. The soloist plays, activates, deactivates and redirects sounds as if controlling a giant console. Each instrument he plays triggers a reaction. The strings, brass and woodwind respond to his gestures, while the other percussionists join in too.

They alternate sound channels with dry percussion beats that act as commands. The result is a piece without fixed movements, with interactive musical worlds that are constantly changing. . The Latin American premiere of Switch will take place with Osesp on 15, 16 and 17 May, conducted by Jac van Steen at Sala São Paulo. The soloist is Scottish percussionist Colin Currie, to whom the piece is dedicated. (click photo for short video excerpt)
